Let's revisit what it means when we speak of "parental rights".


As a foundational precursor to considering what a parental right is, let's think about what is meant by an unalianable right. Why? Because the rights of parents are unalianable.


So what is an unalianable right?

The Founding Fathers had much to say about God-given rights.


The sacred rights of mankind are not to be rummaged for among old parchments or musty records. They are written, as with a sunbeam, in the whole volume of human nature, by the hand of the divinity itself; and can never be erased or obscured by mortal power.

What was the primary and principal object in the institution of government? Was it – I speak of the primary and principal object – was it to acquire new rights by a human establishment? Or was it, by human establishment, to acquire new security for the possession or the recovery of those rights, to the enjoyment or acquisition of which we were previously entitled by the immediate gift, or by the unerring law, of our all-wise and all-beneficent Creator? The latter, I presume, was the case…

I say RIGHTS, for such they have, undoubtedly, antecedent to all earthly governments; rights that cannot be repealed or restrained by human laws; rights derived from the Great Legislator of the Universe.

God is recognized by the nation's framers as the source of our foundational rights. The question that needs asking is this: if God as our Creator wishes His human creations to understand that they have God-given rights, would it be a stretch to suppose that He might choose to “embed” that understanding into the human consciousness?

Jeremiah 31:33 and Hebrews 8:10 both indicate that God’s law is “written upon our hearts”. Are our God given rights written there as well?


Yes, Jefferson points out that life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are among the bedrock rights created and given to us by God. Jefferson goes on to imply that a good many other rights are included as part of God’s endowment, an idea captured beautifully and succinctly as the Ninth Amendment of our federal Constitution:


The enumeration in the Constitution, of certain rights, shall not be construed to

deny or disparage others retained by the people.


It should be noted that James Madison, while proposing the Bill of Rights on the floor of Congress in 1789, acknowledged the most powerful objection to including a list of God given rights within the federal Constitution, namely that an enumerated list of core rights might somehow be looked on as being a complete list of the core rights held by the people. Madison said of this objection: “This is one of the most plausible arguments I have ever heard urged against the admission of a bill of rights into this system; but, I conceive, that may be guarded against. I have attempted it, as gentlemen may see by turning to the last clause of the 4th resolution" (a reference to what would eventually become the above noted Ninth Amendment).


Which brings us full circle to the central topic of this article, namely parental rights. Like other rights held close by the people (we who are sovereign in our system of governance), these divinely granted rights pre-date the founding of our government and the constitutional compact upon which that government is established.


We must depend on the highest court of the land to point out those fundamental rights not already enumerated in our Bill of Rights. So it is with much appreciation and encouragement that we note the views of the Supreme Court of the United States when it weighs in on the subject in Pierce v Society of Sisters.


Per the definition of Parental Rights given in Black's Legal Dictionary:


Parental rights. The sum total of the rights of the parent or parents in and to the child as well as the rights of the child in and to the parent or parents. Anguis v. Superior Court In and For Maricopa County, 6 Ariz. App. 68, 429 P.2d 702, 705. The following are "parental rights" protected to varying degrees by constitution: physical possession of child, which, in case of custodial parent, includes day-to-day care and companionship of child; right to discipline child, which includes right to incucate in child parent's moral and ethical standards; right to control and manage minor child's earnings; right to control and manage minor child's property; right to be supported by adult child; right to have child bear parent's name; and right to prevent adoptionof child without parents' consent. L. A. M. v. State, Alaska, 547 P.2d 827, 835.


Conclusion? Rights enjoyed by parents are foundational and not to be trifled with. The legal wranglings now pushing back against those rights are out of bounds. The people need to make that crystal clear. As the catchy adage goes,

"we do not co-parent with the government".

Working to Amend the California Constitution

The Children's Education Opportunity Act

It is well past time for California parents to be provided maximum flexibility in terms of choosing how their children are educated.

The Children’s Educational Opportunity Act (aka the CEO Act) is a California statewide initiative set for the November 2026 ballot. It ensures that every TK to 12th grade student receives equal funding for all educational pathways, including public, charter, private, faith-based schools, and homeschooling. By addressing educational disparities, the act expands opportunities for all students, regardless of race, family income, or zip code.


Six Key Features of the CEO Act


1. Parents establish an Education Savings Account for their child
Parents can set up a state-controlled Education Savings Account (ESA) for their child from TK through 12th grade. This ESA is funded annually using the student's portion of voter-approved Proposition 98 funds. Initially set at $17,000, the amount adjusts yearly based on California's economic growth. These funds do not increase taxes and are tax-exempt.


2. Parents choose the best education option for their child
Parents select an eligible school that suits their child best.Options range from public and charter schools to private, faith-based institutions, and homeschooling. The chosen school coordinates with the ESA Trust board to allocate funds for educational expenses. Parents do not handle the money directly; transactions occur between the state-controlled ESA and the selected school.


3. Covered education expenses under the Education Savings Account
The ESA covers various educational expenses, including

•  tuition
•  curriculum
•  books
•  online courses

•  school supplies and equipment, tutoring
•  testing fees
•  special needs services
•  religious and academic materials

•  transportation to and from school and school-related activities


4. Unused ESA funds roll over annually and accrue interest
Any unused funds within the student's ESA carry over each year, accruing interest to support future educational expenses throughout the student's life. This is not a voucher program where you lose the funding if you do not use it that year.


5. ESA funds are usable throughout the student's lifetime
Beyond 12th grade, any remaining ESA funds can be applied to educational expenses for

•  trade school
•  community college
•  university
•  postgraduate studies


This will go a long way towards reducing or eliminating student loan debt.


6. ESA funds can be transferred to another ESA or donated to an eligible school
To ensure all ESA funds are utilized effectively, any unused portions can be transferred or gifted to another family member's ESA or donated to an eligible school.

Moms for Liberty Santa Clara Meets with Tara Petsch

The first week of September saw Moms for Liberty National Director of Member Success Tara Petsch sweeping through a number of the western states in order to offer support and encouragement to several chapters. Stopping in our Santa Clara area on Saturday the 6th, Tara brought her incredible Texas energy and sympathetic ears as we relayed our tales of woe at struggling with what can only be described as a heavy lift here in the Silicon Vallely.


For reasons unclear, parents in our county can't seem to be bothered to stand up for their parental rights or offer support to those like Moms for Liberty who are willing to help them do so. 


But the struggle will go on. Thanks, Tara, for helping us to see that it must, and for getting us to keep the faith...

Clear Indications of a Declining Education System

‘These results are sobering’: US high school seniors’ reading and math scores plummet

The average reading and math scores of American high school seniors fell to their lowest levels in two decades in 2024, according to new national data released last week.


The results, from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), found that, on average, reading scores for 12th graders were 10 points lower in 2024 than they were in 1992, when the test was first administered, and that math scores fell to their lowest levels since 2005, when the math assessment began.


The test, administered by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which is part of the US Department of Education, assessed roughly 19,300 12th-graders in math, 24,300 in reading and 23,000 eighth-graders in science between January and March of last year.


The report found that 35% of seniors “performed at or above” the NAEP’s “proficient” level in reading, and 22% were at or above that level in math.


It also stated that 45% of 12th graders scored below the NAEP’s “basic” level in math, marking a five percentage-point increase from 2019. In reading, 32% of students scored below the basic level, which was a two-point increase from 2019.


“These results are sobering,” said NCES acting commissioner Matthew Soldner. “The drop in overall scores coincides with significant declines in achievement among our lowest-performing students,

continuing a downward trend that began before the Covid pandemic.


“Among our nation’s high-school seniors, we’re now seeing a larger percentage of students scoring below the NAEP basic achievement level in mathematics and reading than in any previous assessment.”

One lingering effect of the pandemic present in the report was chronic absenteeism. The report found that about a third of 12th-graders reported missing three or more days of school in the month before the test, up from 25% in 2019.


“Students are spending less time learning,” said Thomas Kane, an education economist at Harvard. “And when they are present, instruction is less efficient because teachers are constantly reteaching material.”

“The uncomfortable truth is that American students have been significantly losing ground for more than a decade,” Eric Hanushek, an education economist, wrote in an opinion piece last week.

Robert Balfanz, a professor at John Hopkins University School of Education, said easy access to information online and the use of online assignments may also be leading some students to treat in-person school attendance as optional.


“In their minds, they tell their parents, ‘Look, all my assignments are online, I can do them even if I’m not at school,’” Balfanz said.


But while the Covid pandemic and school closures had major effects on learning, experts say the academic decline began before 2020.


“The uncomfortable truth is that American students have been significantly losing ground for more than a decade,” Eric Hanushek, an education economist, wrote in an opinion piece last week. “The pandemic didn’t break American education – it was already broken.”


Kane said the decline among lower-achieving students began some time around 2015 and has continued.


“It’s clearly not just the pandemic,” Kane said. “It should be troubling to everyone, and we need to find a solution.”


Experts point to a range of potential factors beyond absenteeism that could be contributing to the decline, including increased screen time and smartphone use, declining student engagement, and the rollback of test-based accountability since the expiration of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2015.


Carol Jago, a longtime English teacher and literacy expert at UCLA, told the Associated Press last week that students today read fewer books and spend less time with longer texts.


“To be a good reader, you have to have the stamina to stay on the page, even when the going gets tough,” Jago said. “You have to build those muscles, and we’re not building those muscles in kids.”


Balfanz added that the constant exposure to short-form and visual media in students’ daily lives may be making academic focus more difficult.


One potential solution, he said, could be to add more dedicated reading time into school days – and restricting smartphones in classrooms.


Kane noted that academic declines are appearing in other countries as well, which suggests a broader global trend that could be linked to increased screen use.


Some US states have already passed laws restricting phone use in schools. Kane believes that there needs to be a national effort to assess the impact and effectiveness of those policies to see whether they work and ought to be implemented in more areas.


The role of smart phones and social media in academic performance came up this week during a Senate hearing on the NAEP results.


Martin West, the vice-chair of the National Assessment Governing Board, which oversees policy for the NAEP, told lawmakers that the rise of “smartphones and social media platforms targeting youth” is one area they should investigate.


“We lack direct evidence of a causal link between smartphones and learning, but I’m convinced that this technology is a key driver of youth mental health challenges, a distraction from learning, both inside and outside of schools, and a deterrent to reading,” West said.


Rebecca Winthrop, a fellow at the Brookings Institution, testified that student disengagement was exacerbated by the pandemic and is being amplified by social media. She endorsed actions such as smart phone bans, higher academic expectations, and adopting more engaging teaching styles.


The NAEP results also reignited the debate around the federal government’s role in education, with US education secretary Linda McMahon saying last week that the lesson from the results “is clear”.


“Success isn’t about how much money we spend, but who controls the money and where that money is invested,” she said. “That’s why President Trump and I are committed to returning control of education to the states so they can innovate and meet each school and students’ unique needs.”


Representative Tim Walberg, a Republican who chairs the House education committee, agreed and said that “by returning education to the states, we can empower parents and local communities and ensure every child gains the skills necessary to succeed”.


But Democratic representative Bobby Scott pushed back, writing that the NAEP results “reinforce the urgent need for sustained federal investment in academic recovery and educational equity”.

“Now is not the time to retreat from our responsibility to provide every child, regardless of zip code, with the opportunity to succeed,” he added.


Balfanz believes that “some collective effort at the national level” is needed to support states and districts in implementing proven solutions. He emphasized the need to “set targets and goals and strategies” and help build the capacity at the local level to be able to achieve them.


Kane said that he agrees that states need to take a “more aggressive role in helping to reverse these trends” but that the federal government also needs to prioritize partnering with states “in a concerted, coordinated effort to answer two questions: finding effective ways to lower absenteeism and measuring the impact of the cellphone bans”.


“Something fundamental in US schools is broken,” Kane warned. “And we need to fix it.”

A good many people cringe at the very thought of speaking in a public setting. Some say they'd actually prefer having to go to the dentist to have a cavity filled. I get it. I do. But it's really not that bad, and it's important. Here are a few key reasons why.

  • You have a very limited amount of time to speak. (And yes, you will be on a timer). Normally each person is alotted three minutes to talk, although depending on the agenda and how many people wish to address the board the time can be cut down to two or even just one minute.cour

  • You don't have to make use of the entire block of time given you. Keep comments short and sweet. Just speak your piece and sit down.

  • You don't have to speak from memory. It is perfectly acceptable to read a statement off of a sheet of paper, a cell phone, or a laptop.

  • Know that all comments become part of the public record. This is hugely important. One of the key components of being a citizen in a representative republic is making sure your views are known. This is done at the voting booth, yes, but it is also done at school board, city council, and townhall meetings. Make your voice heard.

Moms for Liberty California Endorses Sonja Shaw 

for California State Superintendent of Public Instruction

Sonja Shaw, a devoted mom and tigress when it comes to defending the welfare of her two young daughters, decided to take on a broken public school system that has strayed from its central mission of providing a solid education to California's children.


Sonja was elected to the Board of Education in November 2022. Born and raised in Chino California, Sonja was educated in Chino Valley schools and graduated from Ayala High School. She lives in Chino with her husband Chris and their two children Jaxx and Kooper, both of whom attend Chino Valley schools.

Before serving on the school board, Sonja owned and operated two small businesses: one involving training women about fitness and health and the other a professional photography studio. She has also previously held a California Real Estate License. Today, Sonja continues to lead a smallcommunity-based Bible study. She was motivated to run for school board to give parents a seat at the education table.


Sonja has served as President of the Board of Education since 2023. She represents her District as City of Chino Liaison and as a representative of the Baldy View Regional Occupational Program Commission.

California Governor Gavin Newsom continues to face criticism over not taking a firm stance on the issue of biological men competing in women's sports.


In May 2025 it was reported that a male athlete, AB Hernandez, was competing in high school girls’ track and field events in the state, raising concerns about fairness and opportunity for female athletes. While Newsom acknowledged the issue of fairness, he also emphasized the need for compassion and support for transgender youth who face higher rates of mental health challenges.

California, Louisiana Tied For Highest US Poverty Rate, Census Bureau Analysis Finds

California is staggeringly wealthy; home to major agricultural businesses and influential global tech companies, it boasts an economy larger than many nations. But the state also struggles with a persistent poverty crisis.


A new report released this week by the California Budget and Policy Center, a Sacramento-based think tank, found that 7 million California residents, or 17.7% of the population, lived in poverty last year.


California is tied with Louisiana for the title of highest poverty rate of any U.S. state in 2024, according to the think tank’s analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data.


The analysis, adjusted for factors such as family size and local housing costs, finds that these 7 million Californians did not have the resources to meet their basic needs. The number of Californians living in poverty is roughly equivalent to the populations of Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco combined.


Steep housing costs in the state are pushing more people into poverty, with housing the single largest cost in most family budgets, the report said. The problem is especially pronounced for renters. More than a quarter, or 27.1%, of California renters experienced poverty in 2024, compared with 11.1% of homeowners.


The state’s poverty rates have climbed drastically from a recent historic low of 11% in 2021.


The poverty rate in California and in other states had dropped in 2021, as local and federal lawmakers expanded public benefits — including tax credits for parents, emergency allotments to purchase food, and rental protections — to counter the effects of COVID-19 lockdowns that shut down workplaces and strained the economy.


But poverty rates have risen as such policies have been rolled back.


“When Congress allowed these effective policies to expire, they immediately reversed progress, causing the largest increase in the national poverty rate in 50 years, and a significant spike in California’s poverty rate,” the report said.


Impending federal cuts to healthcare and food assistance, as well as reductions in California’s state budget, will further drive up living costs, making it harder for people to support their basic needs, the report said.


Among age groups, poverty rates remain highest among children and for older adults in California. And poverty increases in recent years are starkest for Black and Latino populations. These racial groups experience poverty at approximately 10 percentage points higher than white Californians, the report said.


Federal policies targeting immigrants — such as cuts to food assistance for lawfully present immigrants, including people granted asylum, refugees and trafficking victims, and removal of child tax credits for immigrant parents without Social Security numbers — will only serve to exacerbate that divide, the report said.


Teachers Not Optimistic About Future Of Education, Says Survey

Over 60% of teachers surveyed in the U.S. believe issues within education have gotten worse over the past two years, according to the Connecticut Education Association.


The 2025 Back to School Survey conducted by the CEA pulled answers from 1,000 teachers across all states, with a majority having taught for over 20 years. The survey showed teachers' concerns on topics such as mental health, distractions and student behavior.

One of the first questions posed to teachers was “How satisfied are you with conditions facing educators like you in your school district these days?”


Only 2.73% of teachers answered “very satisfied.” That is 25 teachers out of 1,000.


When asked if teachers feel equipped to deal with students’ mental health challenges, 77% answered no.  


“The problems in our schools are growing more severe, and teachers’ calls for action are being ignored, leaving students to pay the price,” CEA President Kate Dias said. “Our educators are underpaid, disrespected, and stretched beyond their limits – and many are being driven out of the profession in search of careers that value their work, pay them fairly, and treat them with dignity – leaving many classrooms without certified educators to teach our children.”


In the past few years, schools have faced major budget cuts, and according to the survey, almost 80% of teachers believe that teaching is a “high-stress job” and has contributed to the shortage of educators. 


“When we look at Connecticut as a state, there’s a lot of lip service toward teachers and teaching and learning in the state, and there’s not a lot of action when it comes to actionable things that we could be doing to improve conditions for our teachers and our students, to be quite honest,” CEA Vice President Joslyn DeLancey said.


Even states where teachers feel the most supported are seeing historically low test scores. 


“American students are testing at historic lows across all of K-12 … nearly half of America’s high school seniors are testing at below basic levels in math and reading,” Secretary of Education Linda McMahon said. “Despite spending billions annually on numerous K-12 programs, the achievement gap is widening, and more high school seniors are performing below the basic benchmark in math and reading than ever before.”


Trump Threatens to Defund Calif. Schools for Trans Ideology

President Donald Trump issued a vow to defund California schools that continue to promote transgender ideology against the administration's directives.


"Any California school district that doesn't adhere to our transgender policies, will not be funded," Trump vowed Thursday morning in a Truth Social post. "Thank you for your attention to this matter!"


It was the second of a pair of Trump posts taking aim at California, the first attacking California Democrat Gov. Gavin Newsom.


"Gavin Newscum is way down in the polls," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "He is viewed as the man who is destroying the once Great State of California. I will save California!!! President DJT"


On Trump's first day in office he issued an executive order targeting gender ideology titled "Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism And Restoring Biological Truth To The Federal Government."


"Agencies shall take all necessary steps, as permitted by law, to end the federal funding of gender ideology," Trump's order read.


"Federal funds shall not be used to promote gender ideology. Each agency shall assess grant conditions and grantee preferences and ensure grant funds do not promote gender ideology."


In February, Trump signed a directive to strip federal funding from any school that allows transgender women or girls to compete in female sports.


Representatives for the White House and the U.S. Department of Education did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for detail following Trump's defunding vow.


U.S. schools receive the vast majority of their funding through local and state sources, but do receive some money from the federal government.


Trump's post is the latest salvo in his fight against transgender rights as well as the state of California and Newsom.


His administration sued California in July over its policy to allow transgender athletes to compete in girls' school sports, alleging it was a violation of federal anti-discrimination laws.


The focus schools place on transgender ideology concerns an issue affecting fewer than 1% of the U.S. population. A study found there are just 2.8 million people in the U.S. that identify as transgender among the estimated 340.1 million in the U.S. (0.82% of the total population).


Representatives for Newsom's office could not be immediately reached by Reuters for comment.

Well done, good and faithful servant.

In an absolutely horrific political assassination which took place at an event on September 10th on the campus of the Utah Valley University, 31 year old Jesus follower and TPUSA CEO / Executive Director Charlie Kirk was taken from us by a cowardly, deranged hater.

During the now familiar question and answer format in which those who disagreed with him were invited to "come to the front of the line", Charlie was shot mid-sentence. Those on the far left immediately celebrated the silencing of a powerful conservative voice. What the killer and those of his ilk didn't understand is that now that Charlie is gone, more young people than ever are viewing Charlie's Prove Me Wrong campus encounters and his interviews on various topics.


So yes, the war of ideas will continue, and Charlie Kirk, though no longer with us physically, will continue to be a force to be reckoned with. God bless Charlie Kirk, his Turning Point organization, and all who engage in the struggle.

So we are now all Charlie Kirk. It is up to each of us to keep Charlie's vision alive and the truth he spoke front and center.

Lest anyone believe the voice of truth can be easily silenced, since Charlie's death TPUSA has received more than 65000 requests for new chapters (that count as of September 21st). And yes, that number continues to climb.


Those wishing to create a new chapter have a First Amendment right to speak up and make it happen. Moms for Liberty chapters have been seeing certain leftist school administrators trying to tamp down efforts to start TPUSA chapters in their high schools.


Sadly, this is nothing new. Folks have been fighting against these 1A violations on college campuses for many years now. It is clearly unconstitutional. Just know that the Southeastern Legal Foundation stands ready to help with efforts to form new TPUSA chapters.

If there is one word that captures Charlie Kirk's nature, it is Genuine. During his final sit down interview, which took place mere minutes before his death, Charlie was asked for his favorite quote. He provided not one but two quotes:

  • From the Bible, Romans 8:28: And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

  • The other: This too will pass. An adage of Persian origin, this quote speaks to the fleeting nature of life's experiences.

Rest in peace, Charlie. You will be missed.
